Ayurvedic Approach to Sustainable Development

Dr. Yogendra Bhardwaj, Dr. Hari Ram Mishra, and Dr. Bal Ram Singh

Abstract: Sustainablity is the crux of Ayurvedic life principles, which as the first principle of practice, considers balance among the vata, pitta, and kapha tridosa-s. The key to this balance is triguna-s - the sattva, rajas, and tamas - features of mind psyche, which connects life to jnanendriya-s (sense organs), karmendriya-s (organs of actions), and tanmatra-s (primary elements). The fundamental basis of jnanendriya-s, karmendriya-s, and tanmatra-s rests with pancamahabhutas (akasa, vayu, apah, and prthivi) or five elements (ether, air, fire, water, and earth). These five elements are also the origin of the entire cosmos, which further connects human life (vyasti) with the environment or universe (samasti). In thermodynamics, study of any object is divided into system and surrounding, in which the target of the study is considered a system, and everything else is considered surrounding. There are various ways to define the interaction between the system and surroundings. Thermodynamics generally uses the exchange of energy as the medium communicate. The medium could be in other forms as well.
