Whether in Italian spaghetti's, Japanese sushi, curries accompanying wheat or sorghum Indian bread or simply barbecued veggies, brinjal/ eggplant is one of the members that makes a ubiquitous appearance. From posterity to the current day, this vegetable continues to entice the palates and steal the hearts of many. Eggplant (Solanum melongena) is a vegetable said to have originated in India that belongs to the night shade/ Solanaceae family. This plant later spread worldwide through the merchants of the silk route.1 As Hippocrates supposedly said, “let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food”, one would really benefit in knowing how to use this vegetable as a therapeutic tool of one’s diet to conquer illnesses and maintain health. Therefore, to guide us in its rationale-based employment its only pertinent to gain awareness from an Āyurvedic perspective, from the knowledge base of the very civilization it was born and brought up in.
