The Relationship between Stress and Health Consciousness to the Practice of Yoga and Ayurveda - Satyanarayana Parayitam, Nora Ganim Barnes, Bal Ram Singh

Abstract:
The present study empirically examines the relationship between stress, exercise, health consciousness, and the practice of Ayurveda and yoga. The study developed a conceptual model of the relationships between stress, exercise, health consciousness, and the practice of Ayurveda and yoga and tested this model empirically. This study is the first of its kind to test the relationships empirically between these variables. The survey of 360 students from three different universities in the Northeastern region of the United States has resulted in interesting relationships. The results support (1) a positive relationship between stress and the consequences of stress, (2) a positive relationship between the consequences of stress and exercise, (3) a more positive relationship between the consequences of stress to Ayurveda and yoga, and (4) a larger positive relationship between health consciousness to Ayurveda and yoga. Interestingly, relationship between health consciousness and exercise was not as significant, allowing the Ayurveda and yoga industry to expand its outreach to those who offer services for exercise and gym. The practical implications of the empirical model are discussed.
