BS: How did you start your journey with Ayurveda?
DF: My journey into Vedic knowledge has been a long and many-sided exploration since I was very young. Two factors were there in the beginning. On one side was an interest in nature, plants, herbs, nutrition, and vegetarianism, as combined with an interest in Yoga, Vedanta, and Vedas on the other. The herbal side of Ayurveda was most important for me initially and I studied hundreds of herbs as well as many herbal formulas. Fortunately I by chance came into contact with Dr. Vasant Lad in 1983, who had one of the first Ayurvedic programs in the U.S. Going to India, I worked closely for over a decade with Dr. BL Vashta,
one of the senior Ayurvedic doctors and teachers in Maharashtra.
