Depressive Subtypes in Ayurveda - Alok Kanojia

Abstract: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a debilitating disease that is classified with numerous conflicting characteristics in allopathic psychiatry and in the Diagnostic and Statistics Manual Version 5 (DSM-5). Research on depression suggests subtypes of the MDD with variable neurotransmitter profiles, but allopathic psychiatry does not offer a large system to classify these entities. The subtypes of depression are
neurovegetative depression, anxious depression, and depression with anger attacks. These subtypes of depression map onto Ayurvedic principles of doÈa balance. Recent research on the human genome has revealed phenotypic correlations with Ayurvedic doÈas. This paper explores how Ayurveda’s system of classification may be used to put allopathic psychiatric research on depression into a broader context,
potentially guiding allopathic treatment.
