Abstract: India ranks among the top 10 obese nations of the world at approximately one million urban Indians who are either overweight or obese. The World Health Organization has concluded that obesity is
a major unmet public health problem. It is said that sthaulya (obesity) may lead to a plethora of chronic lingering and fatal diseases. In the pathogenesis of sthaulya, all three dosha are vitiated. The aim of treating sthaulya is to reduce vata, agni (metabolic fire), and meda (fatty tissue). Sthaulya is a disorder categorized as a santarpanottha vikara, or disorders due to over nourishment. Such disorders are managed by shodhana (purificatory) procedures in Ayurveda. This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of virechana (purgative) therapy in the management of obesity.
